Review: Julep Maven Box – November 2014

Screen Shot 2014-11-24 at 11.35.08 PMThis is my first time writing about Julep and oh boy am I ever excited!

Julep is a beauty company that I fell in love with as soon as I discovered them. I absolutely adore their nail polishes!

Julep has a beauty subscription service called the Julep Maven program, which delivers three high quality beauty products, treats and coupons each month by mail. Although you can buy their products direct online or via makeup stores, like Sephora, I will be focusing on their Maven program in my reviews.

So how does it work? When you register for their program, you complete a quiz that determines your style profile – classic with a twist, boho glam, bombshell, it girl or modern beauty. Classic with a twist, boho glam and bombshell boxes come with two nail polishes and one beauty product. It girl boxes come with three nail polishes and modern beauty boxes have two beauty products. But one of the great things about Julep is that you can fully customize your box from the 20th to the 24th each month. So you can pick any products from that month’s collection! Also, there are optional add on products each month if you want additional polish, beauty products or special gifts.

The cost? Your first box is free with the code FREEBOX. You just pay shipping. After that, the program is $24.99/month or $19.99/month with a three month subscription, free shipping. And you can opt out anytime.

As an added bonus for being a Maven, you also get great discounts, coupons, rewards and advanced access to special collections. Plus, you have the option of giving your monthly box as a gift or opt out of that month, without charge.

Ok so that’s how the Julep Maven program works. Here comes my review of my personalized November Maven Box.

Shari, Fazia, Top Coat, Bonnie

For November, I picked Shari, Fazia and the Free Polymer Top Coat for my regular box. Then I added on Bonnie.

Shari – Retail Value $14

Shari

Described as a sweet pea crème, Shari is the perfect nude shade for the beginning of winter. It is feminine, modern and incredibly classy with a subtle pink/lilac/greyness that is hard to pin point. In person, it is a lot lighter and a lot less pink than in the image from the Julep website. It’s soft shade makes it easy to wear with anything – work ready but still suitable for a night out. It goes on smooth but thick, so only two coats are needed for full opacity. This is probably my favourite light creme polish ever. I have even received compliments from my mom via FaceTime, which means the colour is so amazing to be seen on screen.

Fazia

While described as a liquid garnet shimmer, Fazia is a more of a dark red/brown. It is a very deep, vampy colour that looks great with my light skin tone. It is a lot darker in person than in the pictures, so be prepared for this if you purchase. I still really like the colour, it was just not exactly what I had expected. The formula is smooth and opaque with a subtle shimmer. Only one coat is needed for full opacity. Definitely a colour I will wear into the gloomy winter.

Freedom Polymer Top Coat – Retail Value $18

This top coat is AMAZING! After reading great reviews of the product, I decided to add it to my box this month in lieu of another winter colour. I tried it for the first time over my Shari polish and boy was I impressed. Today is day 8 and the polish has still not chipped. It is a smooth formula that can be applied as a thick top coat. It dries shiny and sets in a matter of minutes next to a 60V light. The only downside is that, like other top coats, it has a very pronounced smell.

Add on – Bonnie – Retail Value $14

This soft glittery gold polish was not what I expected. I originally bought this polish to use over darker colours that I received in some of my fall boxes. It does not lend itself to application over dark colours because it makes them look muddy. However, it works well over light colours and to my surprise, it stands up to use on its own! Unlike other glitter polishes I have tried, it is so soft and subtle and can be worn during the day without looking too much like a diva. From afar, it is hard to even tell you are wearing glitter –  more like a shiny nude.

So that was my November Box and I couldn’t be happier. Now, I am really looking forward to my December box! Plus Julep has amazing deals coming up for the holidays. Interested in becoming a Maven? Join Maven now and your Snow Day Welcome Box is FREE. ($58 value – just pay $3.99 Shipping).
